Howard. Howard. https://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/mojav That is FALSE. Still doesnt have proper support for APFS? File systems do incur errors, and excellent tools for the checking and repair of APFS are among the most important utilities in macOS. I then ran First Aid on it which I deeply regret. In a CCC clone task you have Advanced Settings > While Copying files > Find and replace corrupted files (this facilitates rsync checksum I assume). In other words, will it be faster to access a contiguous file as opposed to a file with 1,000 (or X) extents when no seeking is done? Since there is only occasional write activity they should be safe from fragmentation. I have a screenshot of the message from MailBlocker if you want to see it. One thing Ive often wondered about SSD-based filesystems is that although seeking as a result of fragmentation no longer happens, the number of extents (or whatever the filesystem calls them) will continue to increase. However, APFS does appear to have achieved its objective of eliminating the routine accumulation of file system errors to which HFS+ was prone. Rebuild directory of APFS. Thanks. After all, thats how its intended to work, just like any other part of macOS. ? If so, what error messages did you receive, if any? Howard. : ), Feb 18, 2020 by The next major release of DiskWarrior (DiskWarrior 6.0) will include the ability to rebuild APFS disks.
As I have explained, I thought quite explicitly, APFS is specifically designed to prevent those from occurring. Sadly, it seems WP has joined the ranks of FB, Google, LinkedIn, etc., with its pernicious spying. Howard. sectors on the SSD and then restore any degradation to factory spec. One of the major changes introduced in APFS is in the way that its file system metadata are changed. But you are not out of options! I assume that you have run Disk Utility from an external drive, the restore partition (command-R boot) or an internet boot (command-option-R)? I still wonder whether I should have left them HFS+. All you've seen is the dialog and proposed laws, nothing has been made the law of the land. I appreciate the info and your expertise. Sometimes, unexpected issues arise. I use it every week (along with Onyx), and that combination hols me keep my Macs "lean, mean, and clean". In the current version of Disk Utility, that isnt all necessary, as checking a container will normally result in each of its volumes also being checked, together with any snapshots. I suppose this must make sense to him. Recover/rebuild APFS Container Scheme? He is a pro at it, for example, while with Jobs he was the one flying to China visiting child slave factories and arranging shipments of 3,4 quarter batches of devices to contain toxic cheap parts assembled by child slave factories., more cuts more profits and its true, Apple has been fined over and over and they dont mind paying the fines as Mr$ Crook has learned that paying the fines is also more profitable then recalls, paying class action law suites off etc cause Apple makes $350 million an hour from all this itself.
As Apples fsck_apfs is written by the engineers that developed the file system, and they now have several years experience at repairing it in macOS, I suspect it will be a good while (years) before any third party tool is a match for it. SO, THE CONCLUSION IS THAT SOME DEVELOPERS ARE NOT TELLING THE PLAIN TRUTH, BUT AT LEAST ONE IS.
But even the former is not bullet-proof. The spinners are pretty much holding mainly read-only storage such as Music and Video libraries (quite large,) Virtual Machine archives (active ones are on SSD,) repo backups, and an installer archive. APFS is proving to be a fine filesystem, but it (rather infamously) only checksums metadata, not file contents. I still use the app to optimize directories for my HFS+ external drives. All you're seeing here is a company that under big Tim has become more aggressive in hiding its code and limiting equipment service to its self. In doing so, it has also removed any need for periodic maintenance. I wish First Aid would recommend I backup the drive before wrecking it. Thank you in advance for your help and have a great day! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ https://www.ecologique-solidaire.gouv.fr No Right to Repair here in the US is still not locked in and even the EU its not. Despite not being checked for the last year, not one error was reported, and all volumes, containers, disks and snapshots were reported as being correct. The problem may arise when you do not check it and eventually issues accumulate over months or years, reaching the point a a major problem. Pretty slack. I expect it will be less needed than with HFS+, since APFS is more robust, but still will be a life-saver when issues arise with APFS. Everything that I see here appears highly ethical, which is one of the reasons that I keep with WordPress and Automattic. Theyve had three and a half years to get into gear. Does DFA rebuild the corrupt directory? At first the unmounting problem is worrying, but all you have to do is repeat the command. Here is my post in another thread: DiskWarrior fails to launch. If you can tell me what those emails contain which is causing the problem, Ill be more than happy to raise it with support. That's good, as Big Sur is still not stable enough yet, even with V11.1 due to arrive soon. I tried reinstalling DiskWarrior, but the problem remains. IF I understand what Steve Gibson says about the new Spinrite 6.1 and the coming 7, it will detect degraded write (read?) But regardless if any of this is true or really spread miss information to smear america its just shows the lack of trust people have with Apple and all these sketchy data recovery apps that require you to be online to use them. Thanks. First rolled out in a bold and daring move on 27 March 2017 to unsuspecting iOS users, weve been running it on our Macs since upgrading to High Sierra in September 2017.
I dont see any notes saying it wont, heres how: How to run repair on a drive. Youll want to create a bootable external drive to run it from or setup a BootWell drive. Not only because competition is good, but also because it is convenient to have different tools in the disk troubleshooting arsenal. Those arent file system errors, and the subject of a whole series of articles here, on data integrity. Thank you. https://www.micromat.com/component/kunen Alsoft (DriveWarrior) is completely misleading and wrong: Using DiskWarrior 5.2 while started (booted) from High Sierra or Mojave. Someone has some insider information? Id also be fascinated to know the rate at which such errors occur in modern SSDs, which is something that Ive looked for, but simply cant find. One example is the current DiskWarrior 5.2, which can detect issues not found by Disk Utilitys First Aid on HFS+ disks. An update for Big Sur compatibility will most likely be released in January. Continuing to improve fsck_apfs and Disk Utility is unglamorous but vital for users, and there will always be scope for third-party alternatives, which Apple should encourage. HFS+, which APFS has all but replaced, was the successor to HFS, which in turn replaced the Macs original MFS in 1985. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. It is clear that APFS is much robust than HFS+. While MFS was designed for use with 400 KB floppy disks and couldnt cope with storage larger than 20 MB, HFS+ was intended for hard disks larger than any currently available. I now can't use DiskWarrior to optimize the directories on my HFS+ disks any longer since I got a 2021 MBP with Monterey. Not a problem for meMailTrackerBlocker just blocks the tracking now. Thanks for the link and information, but to Alsoft I would say so what? Apple released a majority of the APFS format documentation in June of 2020. Not surprised at the criminal monopoly, conspiracy theorist have also gone as far as alleging Jobs was assassinated by the government who has been in the backseat of Apple since the hiring of ex Cyber Security from NSA which kind of does match the whistle blowers info out there about the domestic spying abuses against citizens including the current president for personal gain or investment interests carried out by agencies with zero over sight from DOJ or the office of the inspectors General. They still haven't updated this app in two years. Apple addressed this by introducing journalling, in which the file system makes each change first in a record in its journal, then to the catalogue in the file system metadata. (On my system, Finder actually managed to refresh a window in such a unique synthetically firmlinked path, but a developer whom I notified wasnt as lucky; tests with another file manager werent successful either.) Looking forward to DiskWarrior 6 (hopefully, within three to six months, as they said in Twitter), which will rebuild the directory of APFS disks. We have been waiting for it since 2017 (almost four years ago!) This has been our experience in the office dealing with a LOT of these systems in an area where the internet connections are sub-standard at best. Peter Gamble, Thank you for the detailed response. DiskWarrior is a utility program designed from the ground up with a totally different approach to preventing and resolving directory damage. Although, you could still repair all your HFS+ formatted drives and that is something that wouldnt really be difficult even in an APFS formatted Mac.
I get no feedback at all from those who subscribed to emails, other than the total number. This is the direction many software companies are going. Our developers are now using that documentation to update DiskWarrior to be able to safely rebuild APFS disks. That isnt how APFS works, so theres no such shortcoming. Begin typing your search above and press return to search. Im great with backups of my SSD, but this was a fairly new drive where Id recently put lots of personal files that I hadnt yet backed up anywhere else The drive was partitioned into 2 volumes, APFS and HFS+ for time machine. Just run it and check Activity Monitor to see which process is running. I am now using Open Core EFI boot and it is running Big Sur nicely. Beginning in OS X 10.11, Time Machine records checksums of files copied into backups. Howard. with Google shows people reporting serious problems with APFS that Disk Utilitys First Aid cannot repair. Disk Warrior is much better and efficient repairing damaged disks than Disk Utility, because only the former rebuilds from scratch the directory of HFS+ disks. BTW, this system has an updated RX-580 and WiFi BLE card. My brand new MacBook Pro M1 corrupted an APFS drive thats still fairly new and never gave me problems on my intel Mac. The other important thing to bear in mind is that fragmentation is worst in the file system metadata, where youre not generally dealing with large contiguous files anyway. Thank you. Do you mean that the file system will warn all the times when there is a problem with APFS? I do like the shared Volume feature, which makes disk management flexible. In relation to Stellar Data Recovery Professional, it does not repair disks; it recovers files from them. Thanks for the interesting article. Dane Russell Fjelstad.
Some developers are clear about it in their web pages, like Prosoft Engineering: Drive Genius 5. What is needed is documentation at least as detailed as the one for the HFS+ filesystem. This FSEvents behavior also occurs without firmlinks, namely when you modify, create or delete a file directly in the root of /System/Volumes/Data, possibly because FSEvents reports / instead, which is really not your current path. As said, I do not know. Takes only a second and then eureka, the check proceeds.
The files current checksum does not match the expected recorded checksum. Its not like they have any other product distractions, fiddling about with file systems is their raison dtre. Howard. We would need a scientific report with many cases and scenarios to reach appropriate conclusions. IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEND FEEDBACK TO APPLE SO THAT THEY RELEASE DOCUMENTATION ABOUT HOW TO WRITE TO APFS DISKS AS THEY HAVE DONE ABOUT HOW TO READ THEM. But time will tell once DiskWarrior 6 is released, as Alsoft has promised in their web site and Twitters account. BTW did you know that Catalina has a backdoor as wide as Opra's fat tush just begging for a justification to get your device bricked remotely, some times for as little reasons as some random p0rn advert appearing on a webpage while your browsing netflix. Techtool Pro can also repair Apple's new APFS file system, standard Mac OS Extended volumes, as well as MS-DOS (FAT32) and ExFAT formatted volumes. Disc Warrior 6.0 is *still* unavailable!
There is a lot of confusion in this topic. I think her data is corrupt, because i've moved the drive to multiple MacBooks and get the same error.
Continuing to improve fsck_apfs and Disk Utility is unglamorous but vital for users, and there will always be scope for third-party alternatives, which Apple should encourage. Still doesnt have proper support for APFS? The main one is Rusty Little (Project Manager). Im sorry, I have no idea what this possible tracking is. This is efficient, but inherently prone to error.
it's a 1 month old seagate firecuda 1 TB SSHD. Dane Russell Fjelstad, Ali Sadykov
If this was an HFS+ volume, I bet first aid couldve fixed it. For Big Sur, Apple advises users to check from the bottom up, starting with APFS volumes, then containers, and finally disks. Just like your music or video feeds. https://www.micromat.com/mac-hard-drive- unfortunately I can't wait for diskwarrior. Yes, this can happen, I gather, but still isnt the same penalty as with hard disk seeks. Understand. Manpage: Compute a checksum of data contained within a backup and verify the result(s) against checksum information computed at the time of backup. I assume you have to manually compare and decide which version to keep (source or destination). In any case, the fact is that some people are finding serious problems with APFS that Disk Utilitys First Aid cannot repair. On SSDs, copy-on-write actually helps the essential process of wear levelling, to ensure that the number of erases is spread evenly across storage blocks. But are you sure that it will happen all the times with APFS? Personally, Id like Steve Gibson of GRC to release SpinRite 7 for Mac! The file /etc/synthetic.conf offers 3 examples but only #3 will work properly all the time, e.g.
passed away?). Thus, probably the best approach is to keep on performing routine checks on APFSs health, but instead of at least once a month (as now Alsoft recommends about DiskWarrior for HFS+ disks), maybe once every six months or a year, or whatever, but sometimes; not never ever. Lives nearby and can check if Rusty Little still works at Alsoft? Checking and repairing a volume doesnt detect such data errors, neither can it fix them. The vexing part has been the noted issue of the insistence that First Aid cant proceed because the disk is mounted (of course it is). So please let's not travel down this path. Should you trust Disk Utilitys First Aid orfsck? Use TimeMachine to create a backup and then restore to a fresh drive to double check to see if the corruption is resolved. Among the problems with hard disk storage which HFS+ tried to address were seek times, fragmentation, and limited space. Are you sure that it isnt just to check whether the message has been received? Should anything go wrong while changing file system data, such as a crash or even worse a kernel panic, thats likely to leave the file system metadata with a mixture of the old and new, resulting in an error. It's running the most up to date version of Mojave. Alsoft has mentioned on their website that they will be releasing DiskWarrior v.5.3, which will essentially be their M1-compatible version of v.5.2. Im less lucky. This blog is tracking-free, ad-free, and totally free, and thats the way that I want it to be. Running First Aid in Disk Utility, which in turn calls fsck_apfs, all disks could be checked apart from one 2 TB SSD, which is used by my Content Caching Server, so couldnt be unmouted without shutting that service down. 2.0GHz, 2.3GHz, or 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache. I'd like to repair the data, because if I send her a new install of OS-X, then she moves her data over, we'll have the same issue again. Very informative. For instance, the following articles (amongst many others): The best is to repair disks, but if that is not possible, the second can help to recover files to other disk (the damaged disk will continue being damaged with such second approach). I used diskwarrior for all of our older machines before APFS formatting came out. APFS formatting. The real catastrophe, however, awaits in example #2. Thank you. Our developers are now using this documentation to update DiskWarrior in order to safely rebuild Apple File System (APFS) disks. * Partitioning of drives, plus many other functions. Alsoft have been promising to deliver support for APFS-formatted disks ever since Apple started using that format, which was Sierra, March 27, 2017 - over four years ago. . Terms Howard. And lastly find all of your cloning apps and throw them all away! https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to- Is "rebuilding" with Disk Warrior and "repairing" with Disk Utility the same? Pretty slack. I can report, though, that synthetic firmlinks on APFS are kinda broken. Very helpful. To assess its success, I have surveyed all the storage accessed by my iMac Pro, looking for errors. Please check CCCs excellent documentation if you have further interest in this. The few things that WordPress does keep track of, like page views, are all fed back to bloggers. They need to run extra and as oneshot actions. If you dont like what it does, please unsubscribe to them and use the ample RSS feeds instead. It doesnt tell you whether any file on your Mac is intact or corrupt. The need for this reduced substantially with journalling, but it was a workaround rather than a full solution, and directory maintenance remained popular. You have not a shred of evidence that these are anything like the cumulative errors to which HFS+ is known to be prone, have you? Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Mac". What's in the works. I think that copy-on-write for file system metadata is still an advantage to them in terms of reducing disk errors, so perhaps converting them wasnt a bad idea. Of course, I still have a fully configured Mojave partition on a separate disk for backup and recovery. Updates: Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, SilentKnight, silnite, LockRattler, SystHist & Scrub, xattred, Metamer, Sandstrip & xattr tools, T2M2, Ulbow, Consolation and log utilities, Taccy, Signet, Precize, Alifix, UTIutility, Sparsity, alisma, Text Utilities: Nalaprop, Dystextia and others, Spundle, Cormorant, Stibium, Dintch, Fintch and cintch. New EU rules that could mark the end of 'throwaway culture' and e-waste will force tech companies including Apple and Samsung to make products that last longer and are easy to repair. ; and ii) if the answer is that DiskWarrior 6 will be released for sure with 100% confidence (which would mean that Alsoft has all the required documentation to do it), should we expect it this year, next year, or in which timeframe (even if widely or wildly approximate; for instance, in five years, or whatever)? Thank you. Can we start with those in the knowwhat exactly DOES Disk Utility or fsck actually DO? DiskWarrior resolves existing disk damage by rebuilding your HFS+ disk directory, doesn't work on APFS volumes yet. Its impressive that your scan of several terabytes showed no errors, but if any bits within the files had gotten flipped, would you have any way to notice, until you opened the file and it looked funny? Apple should not do that!!! Watch what he says on Twit TV or join the SpinRite beta test group? The files recorded checksum is invalid. https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19455-01/805. yesterdayJul 28, 2022 by Alsoft posted a new page regarding DiskWarrior and Big Sur compatibility. I understand your anger and frustration. As a result, in common with most file systems designed for hard disks, it defaults to overwriting data when changing it, notably in the file system metadata. Journalling isnt a solution, as it doesnt prevent those errors from occurring, merely mitigates them when they do occur. Yes, DiskWarrior is a solution to a known shortcoming in HFS+. -. While the post linked below does not mention rebuilding the directory of an APFS drive, it does say you can use Apples Disk Utility to repair them. I think the problem with the cumulative errors which occurred in HFS+ is that most werent apparent to the file system until there were quite a lot, by which time there were more major problems. firmlink a root directory of /System/Volumes/Data, FSEvents will report non-existing paths, i.e. Because its primarily designed for use with SSDs, for which seek times and fragmentation arent a concern, what APFS does is to write changed metadata to a new location on disk, and only when that has been completed successfully is the original metadata released for re-use, a process known as copy-on-write. Do keep in mind SSD drives can encounter issues that cant be fixed as unlike a spinning disk which has tracks and sectors that can get messed up they use direct block access. It's a slower process than DiskWarrior but at least it's capable of doing the job. Jun 26, 2022 by a firmlink to a file in your home folder (baz > Users/USER/baz). Thank you. I'm thinking they will drop it in the too-hard basket. Thanks in advance! Hence are not as efficient and safe as if the filesystem contained them natively and runs checksumming all time. Howard. Sorry they are literally nothing whatsoever to do with me, but WordPress.
https://www.prosofteng.com/drive-genius- TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior was a valuable tool for all Mac users prior to the introduction of journalling in HFS+. So when you want to create a root directory, lets say /mnt, you should not follow Apples example #2 and firmlink /mnt and /System/Volumes/Data/mnt, because it might lead to a severely impaired experience, but you have to use an already existing location, i.e. * Formatting, mounting, un-mounting, and ejecting disks. Thank you. Thats why we are fighting hard for the Right to Repair. underpaid? Finally, I'm curious if you have an opinion on Stellar Data Recovery? Meanwhile, I have moved on to using TechTool Pro to repair APFS drives with Directory issues. I dont recall performing any previous file system checks in that year, and havent noticed any file system errors. Typically only takes a bit of time, but may not be necessary now. You said its primarily designed for use with SSDs, for which seek times and fragmentation arent a concern. A common problem encountered when trying to check volumes or their containers is that Disk Utility returns an immediate error, reporting that item couldnt be checked because the volume couldnt be unmounted. Howard. That is why I would like to test DiskWarrior 6 when released to reach appropriate conclusions. TIMEMACHINE s command line version diskutil has the verifychecksums verb. See if the free Demo allows you to fix the drive. I am still waiting for DiskWarrior 6 to do it with APFS disks. There are more than 100 snapshots, made by both Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner, and those disks have been running Catalina then Big Sur over the past year. Frank Kistner, 2022 iFixit Licensed under Creative Commons Privacy And there are typos again that I only notice after posting. But sometimes beginners are luckier. The onus is on those who feel such maintenance utilities are necessary to provide objective evidence of any shortcomings in APFS which they feel such maintenance might address. Alsoft should not do it!!! Now, it would be really great if Rusty Little (Alsoft/DiskWarrior Project Manager) could tell us something about how is going on the development of DiskWarrior 6 to rebuild the directory of APFS disks. Ugh. So you do still think that you need to perform regular maintenance checks on the file system in current releases of APFS? In addition to comparing metadata (filename, filesize, timestamps) between source and destination to get certainty that this is the same file, it also does a checksum (hence needs a full read of all content on source and destination). Worst of all, macOS versions above 10.12 Sierra re-format disks as APFS, so users are left in the cold.
/bar instead of /System/Volumes/Data/barthe latter is the actual path, the former is just the firmlink, so when you modify, create or delete files in that *unique* synthetically linked root path, GUI file managers often (if not always) dont receive any correct path, so the contents of the current window or tab arent refreshed. Thank you. As an example MS Office can be bought as either as installed app on your drive (no network access at all) or as a service via cloud.
I would be happy then. It would detect if source and destination dont match. Apple has recently released the APFS format documentation.
