Mark Stephenson: Yeah, Im holding a CAS podcast mug. And as the hard surface does imply you can do more than just t-shirts so-, And theres some other, while were listing things you need. Yeah. Its going to hinder the success of your business.
Marc Vila: So now that weve said all that, theres various models of printers and I think really honestly if we talk about them all its boring and its a sales pitch. Theyre always for something else. JavaScript is disabled. Thats the thing.
So who do you plan to sell to, right? So Mark, youre the master at this, tell us a bit about who do you plan to sell to? Its a hot topic when it comes to white toner printing because part of making a t-shirt transfer with white toner is often, not always, its often marrying in a heat press a couple of different sheets. Your customer will tell you. You can make adjustments and saturation and positioning and all that stuff.
Mark Stephenson: Yap. Just because everything is so much the same. They do exactly what theyre told very, very well.
The printers working perfectly fine. Marc Vila: Anyways, so a good segue is, and I wrote it differently, but you inspired another thought.
White toner printing, and well talk about what that is in a moment. I hope this has been educational. printer Youre going to have designs you sell, and youre going to do some custom designs. And you mentioned earlier Digital HeatFX. If they have a bunch of things to sell you, then it becomes a little bit of which one of these things do I match with this customer? And if you buy a crappy shirt that is twisted or has terrible material or falls apart by itself in the wash, youre not going to have a great result. So theres just a quick definition for anybody whos not new to Who doesnt understand this, is not in the business or is not even shopping for this yet, but youve kind of stumbled across starting a t-shirt business and this might be the way to go. Yeah, okay.
And generally speaking, its not the same as when you print on paper at home. You might want to work out larger sizes. And generally speaking, its not the same as when you print on paper at home. How many shirts do you have to sell to stay in business? What does it mean to have a DigitalHeat FX System? I always just feel that theyre not for your business. And so what does that mean? A lot of this stuff you can generalize, or if youre looking at a different way to start doing t-shirts like sublimation or something, you could apply a lot of the same rules, the same logic to your sublimation. Theyre not t-shirt printers, but they know about t-shirt printing and they produce graphics for that. And at ColDesi we have a graphic arts service called coldesigraphics.com. Some are bigger in print on 13 by 19 paper, some have optional toners.
I have an Oki C811 (white toner printer). Youre going to need Youre probably going to want to invest in something to test your heat press every once in a while. So, thats a part of this decision making process too. It will hinder your success. You need the software that works the printer properly, that handles the design, that handles the printing process. I always just feel that theyre not for your business. So, my favorite thing that you put in the notes here is picking your nice markets. So now that weve said all that, theres various models of printers and I think really honestly if we talk about them all its boring and its a sales pitch. So lets just go ahead and start with a definition of white toner right now. Because I realized that not always that simple. So the reason that we talk about whatever the current price range is when youre listening to this is white toner printers between four and $15,000 or whatever is.
So if youre going to start this, one of the challenges that people run into is we had somebody left a review that said something like this recently. I dont know if its Irony. Doesn't seem to hold up well in the wash. If its warped and stuff like that, thats uneven areas. Specifically, those are just the two categories to consider, can have hotspots. Marc Vila: Yeah. And then you went to McDonalds right after. Its paper shaped and it kind of feels like paper. Mark Stephenson: Yeah. Its the software and the entire process in conjunction with that paper.
I mean, weve damaged printers.
Theres always speeds and takes in this stuff.
Marc Vila: Yeah, exactly. Bad art is going to be everything that drives you insane if you dont have a solution to it. Its a couple of miles, but youve got to get deeper. Marc Vila: So what are your options for your printer, right? Right. Im compelled, thats all Im going to say. Use a graphics agency Only pay for what you need. And the person youre talking to is going to qualify their answer. So you go online where you buy your shirts, hopefully you buy some shirts at colmanandcompany.com, because weve got blanks there. If not, youre probably going to hit a wall at some point in time where youre not hitting all your goals. Marrying, pressing, etc is under 250-350 degrees. It doesnt have to be a big, long business plan, multi pages thats been vetted by numerous people. And that has a lot of benefits too. And I have a system, heres a surefire way to make sure youre using the right blanks. A printer, software, paper and toner that has all been tested and designed to work together. And that kind of just comes with Adobe, you plug the printer in and it works, right? You can maybe make a van go super fast, but the gas mileage might be terrible on it. Marc Vila: Whats your break even?
Bad art is going to make your printer look bad. Yeah, I mean, if youre doing vinyl, its probably going to be the most forgiving on your heat, which is why a cheap heat press might work fine for doing a lot of hobby vinyl stuff. Yeah, because youre I love that. Check them out, hand them out, ask peoples opinion. Its paper shaped and it kind of feels like paper. Yeah. And figured out the amount of white toner that should be applied and made the software maker of Print Optimizer install that as presets. Yeah. Youll get more referrals and more repeat business with a really good quality shirt and theres enough profit in there for you to afford to do that, in almost every circumstance.
And then all that stuffs fixable.
Marc Vila: So what you said, actually, just it segues or youre just Youve been practicing segueing?
Right? Number one rule, simple plan at minimum. So if you put good paper in your printer, youre going to get good stuff out of it. Yap. Do you plan to sell to a football team, nothing but football teams? It can control how much white toner you put down. Mark Stephenson: I mean, and the sad part is that these are all stoppers. How straight is the metal that they cut? And we added that specifically because of all the things that weve talked about with graphics already, is there are people that think that part of starting a white toner printer business is learning how to do design and they think its probably simpler than it is, or they dont have a good idea of what that process is like and realize its an expertise.
Bad art is going to affect your business. That dont feel good. Mark Stephenson: Weve had all of these issues by testing some paper and it just turned out to be terrible. A temperature gauge too.
I mean, its just-. If you put something good into your printer, you will get something good out. So two things-.
Yeah, and youre just not working under it. Marc Vila: Yeah, laser printer is how you say LED. Yeah. So there might be a corner that doesnt have as much pressure as the rest. Mark Stephenson: Plus youre all going to do it out there. This is the money Im willing to risk. Now if youre in a smaller sized town and theres really not a print shop that can do on-demand printing in your area, well, then youre filling a need for a local market.
I didnt realize I would have to create graphics. But now if youre realizing what the problem could be, then set a goal and figure out how are you going to do that? I mean, I didnt break anything. Which we didnt mention earlier specifically, but it really might just be this is the money I have. So theres also some specificity to that as well, but graphics are going Graphics is another key thing. Marc Vila: Yeah, thats a great way to put in. Mark Stephenson: Right. Youre going to get The quality of the shirt that you print on is just like the quality of the paper, the quality of the toner, the quality of the heat press. I printed a picture from a phone. Okay. I was just going to say, delivering small packages.
And if you are heating one area of a transfer hotter than another area of your transfer, the probability of that transfer adhering to the shirt and looking the way you want is particularly low. These are all links in the chain, and every link has to be strong. Controls everything about the print so you get a good image.
Because a lot of this stuff is exact type of science stuff. Yeah. And when you talk about, like Marc had mentioned earlier, whats the best printer or even whats the best white toner printer for my business? And today were here to talk about Beautiful mug, by the way. I just mentioned a bunch of different things it can do. If you put better grade paper in there, youll get a better quality print out. So now that we know shirts are really important, its just as important as the paper, just as important as the printer and the software. The printers working perfectly fine. Itd be very inconvenient and hard and expensive for when you probably should have maybe a little electric car or something, I dont know. They loses a race.
Well go back and forth between the reasons. So if you have something with a dark background, right? Youre less likely to burn yourself. So we have the most experience in matching people with their business idea to the right printer. Yeah, and I think that there is something to even be said of a locale being a niche market as well, to a degree. You need something simple to start with so you have a direction to go, and then the details will change along the way, right? And I like that because once youre done with that, then you move on to the logical next step. Bad art will frustrate you. Marc Vila: Because people werent happy. So even temperature, right? Yeah. .. Theres a little short list of things you could research and find out why you want them or talk to your rep about them. And luckily, weve curated a bit of that too so we can recommend the right blanks. And if you are heating one area of a transfer hotter than another area of your transfer, the probability of that transfer adhering to the shirt and looking the way you want is particularly low. Marc Vila: Youre going to be sad. So Im going to jump in on the next point that you put. And feel different and wash different and cost a different amount. Read the article to see different printers and details.
That is the name and the brand of software. Marc Vila: We talk about it all times. Putting down more might make it bolder or brighter. And chemists looked at what happened there, and then the software engineers went and then the paper chemists. Its just the wrong system, right? Thats your plan. And after youre done with this podcast, go back to our other episodes and well put some links in, but everything that Marc just mentioned, weve done multiple podcasts about. In one year from now, I mean, right? Thats your system, right? Those will all fit into 16 by 20 press. And ColDesi has graphic artist that does art just for marketing department full time, right? Hindsight. They loses a race.
Marc Vila: Yeah, and you have to be just pretty good at seeing that and have an eye for it too. But if youve got a basic plan, you can get going. Which is us, which is ColDesi. Free Shipping & Ground Shipping available in USA only, not in AK or HI. oki printer3 dfx And with a pullout drawer or a swing away, basically the top, the hot part lifts straight up and then moves.
Because we can guarantee that we educated you. If you get a small heat press youre going to be limited to smaller print sizes, and youre also just going to have reduced efficiency in general. Does it come in childrens sizes because you have children there? Overall, though, a lot of this spills into what you need to start a t-shirt business in general too. Weve done ROI and how to make money, things like that. The systems at Coldesi are DigitalHeat FX. It doesnt mean its not just like, well, go buy heat press. So Mark, youre the master at this, tell us a bit about who do you plan to sell to?
The pick of ColDesi customers as of Jan 2022 is the Hotronix Fusion heat press. So you might have an artist that works through your business because your business can afford it, et cetera. Then we should have started with a boat because you dont need anything, but a six pack and a cooler to pilot a boat. And when you talk about, like Marc had mentioned earlier, whats the best printer or even whats the best white toner printer for my business?
A complete printing system, like the Digital HeatFX System is a physical printer, software, paper, and toner thats kind of all put together on purpose designed to work together in conjunction with itself. And again, its not even just the paper, kind of another little asterisk here. But if you decide to buy a Digital HeatFX System or another white toner printer and you have your own heat press that youve been using for years, its been fine on your vinyl or whatever process that youre using and you decide to risk it, dont get mad at us. crowd I dont have a beard to stroke, but Im doing my best. [inaudible]. Mark Stephenson: Im going to say its not. Marc Vila: Theres no special license for t-shirt printing, right? Each one of them are different and you can get all the information in the notes.
So if youre going to start this, one of the challenges that people run into is we had somebody left a review that said something like this recently. Mark Stephenson: Next is shirts. We even put it in the paperwork when we send quotes into our sales documents, that we have recommended the following heat presses for optimal results. Mark Stephenson: No, they are. Youre going to be unhappy and youre going to be cursing at everyone that you know, and blaming everybody else because its not your fault. Yeah, once, right? Listen to it again, read the notes, look for the links that we put in there. Thats what all of these softwares are that control printers. Mark Stephenson: Next is heat press, a heat press machine, hot topic.
Or are you going to sell it nationally through a website? And your niche might just be, Im the only person offering this to this group of people that live in this area. But some of that frustration is alleviated by having a basic plan. And the next is And the reason that the next is having an even pressure for the same reasons, because the way you make a good quality transfer thats going to last a long time, thats going to peel properly, et cetera, is that you heat and press consistently them together, the two sheets together and heat and press with consistent temperature and pressure on the garment that youre adhering it to. Marc Vila: Yeah, its not real paper, right? Maybe, I mean, but probably not because it was the first time they ever kissed and it was being put on a shirt. And theres a lot of great things you could do. You can multiply it so you can gang print small logos on one sheet. And I dont want to leave out, Im not sure if well get to it later on, but part of that system is also the soft cost of training and technical support. The magic of the system is the EZ Peel paper combined with Print Optimizer software which prints vibrant high-quality color using our white toner printer systems. Mark Stephenson: If youre selling to daycares, you might look at the tiny ones. Using a higher end press and T.Seal finishing sheet seems to help with durability. How to choose a niche market. Marc Vila: And its like, okay, I mean, I understand the frustration and we want to help you with that as company and as all the people that work at ColDesi want to do.
And that opens like a clamshell with the top part is the hot part and moves away from you, past your face when you lift it up. Yeah, and its probably not a heat press that you may have had for 10 years. Marc Vila: Yeah, thats great.
Its a very specific group of people or a specific area or combination of both. Curated is really a great word because weve gone out into the world and done and found all these things so you dont have to go through the trial and error that we did.
Yeah, Im holding a CAS podcast mug.
So now that weve got paper, next on the list, we have two things left on the list. Its what its called. because one could say you could put the grade of tires that go on a Corvette on a luxury vehicle. But you go to a place where you can reliably buy shirts and go back and buy them again. Marc Vila: Yeah, and I think that there is something to even be said of a locale being a niche market as well, to a degree. Marc Vila: They shouldnt, right? Because youre forced to do that. You better have answers to all these questions. Two things, 10 minutes and I think were good. Its like crushed up plastic, almost. Marc Vila: Yes, and the other thing were going to do is you may be listening to this episode sometime in the future where theres a new model or another models discontinued, another model they cant make a chip for it and its disappeared off the earth, I dont know. And its got to look and feel right, and wash well. But these are a lot of the core things that we hear about out that frustrate people, which is why we put this episode together, is just, I mean, lack of a plan, lack of graphics, lack of Just not understanding why none of the customers are happy with the shirt when you bought the cheapest shirt you could buy. Yeah.
So its a serious and important part of what it takes to run and be successful at a white toner printer business. Those are all options that you might want to be able to control. I mean, the heat is above your head and your arms. And print it on a shirt.
Hey everyone, and welcome to the Custom Apparel Startups Podcast. You cant be a Disney fan and print Disney stuff and sell it online. And the technologys probably eight years old. You need the right printer that fulfills the need of that plan, the needs of that plan, like the Corvette versus the F2500 or whatever it is.
Mark Stephenson: Yeah, Tampa would be a local market. Just some natural vision for it.
